Well… Honestly, you don’t really need anything more than a smartphone with decent video quality. However, if you want to produce high-quality content, you may need to acquire a few things!
1 — Camera
In fact, if you have one of the latest smartphones, you can definitely use it to record your videos. As long as you are able to shoot at 1080p or 4K, and at a decent frame rate (depends on what you intend to do), you are set in this department.
If not, we suggest you either update your phone or get a DSLR that can shoot decent quality videos. For example, the Canon EOS 70D is one of the most used cameras by YouTubers.
The higher the resolution, the better will the user experience be. Sure enough, the resolution is not everything. If you want to be successful, and grow your audience, you will need to produce high-quality content, and not only high-quality video. Also, the way you present yourself, how entertaining you are, will have some impact on how you grow your audience.
2 — Microphone
Your video will not be worth much if the quality of the audio is bad. While, with the camera, you can get by just by using a smartphone, when it comes to sound quality, smartphones are not going to cut it. You will need an external microphone.
There are several types of microphones you can use, as well as different price ranges. You can use a lavalier microphone (the ones that attach on to your lapel), you can use a boom microphone (similar to how they do it in Holywood), or you can use a stationary microphone placed in front of you (how podcasters do it).
Now you have to think, what will you be doing in your channel. Are you going to do a lot of outside shots? Then perhaps stationary microphones (like podcasters use) might not be a good idea, as they are quite heavy to carry around). This is crucial! Unless you can do unedited runs of talking (then, well done to you), you will need to edit, cut, paste, put some nice audio, some nice intro, etc. A video editing software will be great to upgrade your YouTube game.

4 — Royalty Free Music
If you want to put some nice music in the background of your video, you can do so. However, if you put music protected by copyright, you can have your video demonetized, or worse, you can have a copyright claim made against your channel.
Therefore, every time you want to put a song that you do not have the rights to, you can do so by using a royalty-free song. There are several websites that let you use royalty free music, for example:

Tip: You can always contact some ‘start-up’ musician and ask them to use their music on your channel. It is likely, they will say yes given that you place their name on the description. It is a win-win situation.
5 — Content
Well… content is king. I have said it before. Make high-quality content, and you will see your audience rise. Maybe you will not see it immediately, but, eventually, you will see it!
Google, watch other YouTubers, read, etc. Learn how to edit videos. Learn the different features of your camera. In no time, you will be a YouTube pro! :D
